Preheat the oil, in a medium pot, to 375F.
Combine the beer, flour, garlic, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Whisk until smooth.
Dredge the strips of fish in a small amount of flour.
Dip the strips in the batter, one at a time, and slip into the oil.
Fry a few strips at a time, but be sure to heat oil back to 375F before adding more.
Serve with potato wedges or chips.
