Throwback Thursday: Purple Plum Pie

February 24, 2011 19 comments Article Dessert, Fruit, Recipes

This week’s Throwback Thursday recipe is probably my favorite pie recipe that I have made to this day. The plums have the perfect amount of tartness that makes this pie so amazing. Also, if you ever have the opportunity to pick your own plums, take advantage of it, you’d be surprised how many plums you can get from even just one tree! =)

Purple Plum Pie

Serves 8

  • 4 cups sliced fresh plums
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 (9 inch) unbaked deep dish pastry shell

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 4 tablespoons cold butter or margarine

Directions:

  1. In a bowl, combine the first six ingredients and pour into the pastry shell.
  2. For topping, combine sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg in a small bowl
  3. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over filling.
  4. Bake at 375 degrees F for 50-60 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown. (Cover edges of crust during the last 20 minutes to prevent overbrowning.) Cool on a wire rack.

Very interesting! My grandparents have several plum trees behind their house which never seem to get picked because we don’t really have a use for them. I’ll have to give this a try when the plums come on this summer.
